Protecting Valuable Open Space
Preserving open space and parks was a high priority of The Irvine Ranch® Master Plan from the start, and the Irvine Company's commitment to protecting the valuable open space on the Ranch has become even stronger over the years. The original Master Plan called for 10,400 acres, roughly 11 percent of the 93,000-acre ranch, to be set aside for open space and parks, but on November 28, 2001, Irvine Company Chairman Donald Bren announced a major conservation milestone: More than half of the Ranch— over 50,000 acres— would be permanently protected as open space and for recreational uses.
These lands are important from an environmental and scientific standpoint. They are home to hundreds of species of native plants and animals and offer every form of public recreation imaginable. And twice, these permanently protected open spaces have been recognized as a Natural Landmark.
It’s rare to have all the amenities of urban life in such close proximity to vast and varied wilderness areas ranging from rugged foothills to oak-filled canyons to sandy beaches. This open space that is being carefully preserved for future generations defines and enriches communities on The Ranch and provides a great variety of recreational opportunities for residents.
